Overview
Two features shipped in a Mac toolkit with 24k stars.
Vorssaint is a free, GPL-licensed menu bar toolkit for macOS with over 24,000 stars on GitHub. The maintainer merged two of my pull requests to its screenshot tools, and both shipped in version 3.4.0 with credit in the release notes.
What I did
The work
The screenshot editor gave each tool a key from its place in the toolbar, so four of its thirteen tools had none. I added a custom key or modifier combination for each tool, recorded with the app's existing shortcut recorder.
A new key is checked against the other tools, the app's own shortcuts, window layout actions, and the live macOS shortcut table. When it is taken, the caption names the owner and the old key stays.
Digits follow what each key types on the active keyboard layout, so on a French AZERTY keyboard, Shift and the number row still move a tool. The new copy is translated into all 13 languages the app ships.
My second change adds an off-by-default setting that gives the screenshot preview the keyboard as it appears. An earlier fix had made Escape and Enter wait for a click, and a user thanked me on the pull request for bringing it back.
Both pull requests built with zero warnings and passed the project's test suite of more than 10,000 checks.
